Remove Makeup with Only Water: Makeup Eraser Dupe Costs Next to Nothing!

Remove Makeup with Only Water: Makeup Eraser Dupe Costs Next to Nothing!

If you’re anything like me, taking off your makeup is more of a pain than it should be. Half the time, the remover you’re using doesn’t get all your makeup off, or it burns your eyes, or leaves your skin feeling greasy.

Well, I have good news for you: there’s a way you can take your makeup off using one totally safe and natural ingredient, that is free for you to use.

All you need to take your makeup off is water!

Yep, you heard me right.

Water and a Makeup Eraser cloth.

But read until the end, because I am going to share with you how to make one of these magical cloths yourself and it won’t cost you more than the change you already have in your wallet.

What is a Makeup Eraser?

MakeUp Eraser is a brand of makeup removing cloths that says you can take all your makeup off with only water- which is totally true.

I got a sample of the product in the mail, and tried it out, and it did indeed take all my makeup off with just water.

Kind of mind-blowing, considering all the products and junk we’re somehow convinced are necessary for effective makeup removal, and yet these are the products that don’t work. Makes me mad thinking about all the money companies make by selling us crap we truly don’t need.

There are also a number of off-brands selling the same products for cheaper, but these don’t always work as well.

How do you use it?

Using one of these clothes is so easy! You literally get it wet with water, warm or cold will do, and wipe your face down. For makeup removal the side with the short nap works better, and the side with the long nap can give your skin some gentle exfoliation.

Why Use a Makeup Eraser?

According to Makeup Eraser, the 3rd most wasteful product in the world is disposable wipes, and 1.3 billion wipes are used daily, which is 2x the waste of the plastic straw!

This product not only saves your body from the gross and entirely unnecessary chemicals that are in makeup removers, but it reduces waste by a ton: no more single-use, disposable makeup wipes or cotton rounds!

In addition to being a zero-waste product, there are several other benefits as well:
• Antibacterial
• No chemicals
• Lasts 3-5 years
• Machine washable
• Great for sensitive skin
• Face + lip exfoliator
• Saves money

When I began trying to reduce my waste last year, I struggled to find a good clean makeup remover; I tried several DIY recipes but none of them worked. And then I discovered this alternative!

The One Downside…

While these makeup removing cloths are fantastic at reducing waste, and are better for your skin, there is one downside that I have found to using this kind of microfiber material:

synthetic fibers.

If you are concerned about synthetic fibers/microfibers and the problems they pose (micro plastics in the water chain/supply) when cleaned in a washing machine, I would encourage you to look into purchasing a GUPPYFRIEND Washing Bag.

These are laundry bags that you fill with clothes or items to wash that are made from synthetic materials (spandex, nylon, polyester, etc.), so that those microfibers and micro plastics don’t make their way into our water supplies. After washing, you remove items from the bag, and remove any fibers that were collected during the wash, in a fashion similar to cleaning the lint trap of the dryer.

You mentioned I could make one myself…

Public Service Announcement: The “exclusive patented, ultra-soft woven polyester blend cloth” that MakeUp Eraser claims is the secret to makeup removal with water only- well…it’s not so exclusive.

And I was up ready to fork-over $20 of good money for one of these name brand clothes that are evidently…not exactly magic after all.

When I told my mom about this product, she decided she wanted to have one, too. We thought, because of the large size that we could buy a MakeUp Eraser and then just cut it in half, and finish the edge, to share.

But, she didn’t want to pay the price (there’s no question where I get my frugality from).

So, we tried one off-brand from Amazon that we weren’t thrilled with before she had a revelation.

And although I was skeptical at first, this discovery is one worth sharing.

I need you all to listen carefully to me: the MakeUp Eraser is simply microfiber fleece fabric.

Microfiber fleece.

Like probably half the blankets sitting in your house at this moment.

Microfiber fleece. (Not to be mistaken for a microfiber towel- yuck, those are scratchy.)

We went to the Goodwill, and found two different microfiber fleece items, a pair of girls pajama pants and a child’s hooded blanket, for $2.50 each.

And we tested to see if the fabric for these items was just as effective as *the* MakeUp Eraser.

On both, one side had a short nap and the other a long one, just like the name brand cloth.

Look at all this available fabric! These could make a dozen large makeup cloths.

The small pink square is my MakeUp Eraser sample. The other two are what we found from the Goodwill. These microfiber fleece products took off our all our makeup with only warm water.

So, if you were considering spending $20 on a MakeUp Eraser, save yourself the money, go to your local thrift store, and buy something like what we did here instead.

Cut it up, share it with your friends. Share the love, share the magic. Reuse these items that were donated, rather than letting them be eventually thrown away.

Using a MakeUp Eraser reduces waste for sure. Reusing items like these, and then not having to throw away makeup wipes, is double waste reduction! Woohoo!

If you don’t believe this little experiment I’ve shared with you today, go try it for yourself and recreate our test. Let me know if it works as well for you!

But, if you’d rather spend the money to buy the name brand, you can make your purchase here, and get $5 off your first order, or take 20% off your purchase by using the code SUSTAINABILITY20 at checkout.

I hope you can benefit from this awesome discovery, and that as a result you are better able to simplify your life and your beauty routine…

  • WOW! I am so impressed! I would love to try one of these, so I’ll be on the lookout for something the kids have outgrown that I can cut up. Then next time I know we are going to visit my in-laws, I’ll see if my MIL would be willing to put an edge on some of them. Between my girls and me, we could save the world some wipes and products and such!

    • I have some material that I can cut up and edge for you, if you’d like! I can make you a few so you can share the love with anyone you think would want one:)
